To war
Or
not to war

That is the question.

With all that is going on with war in Iraq, I thought and prayed about doing a study that may help some of you out.
I will try my best not to give my opinion and I will stay out of political issues in this study.
Rather we will look at what the bible says about war.

As always, I would encourage you to pray before you start this study.

Thou shalt not kill.
Ex 20:13(KJV)

When you mention war to anyone, the first thing they think of, or mention, is this verse and commandment in the bible.
So is God saying that war is wrong by giving this commandment?
Well if He is, then He has broken His own commandment several times when He told the children of Israel to go to war.

  • Num 21:1-3 1 The king of Arad, the Canaanite, who dwelt in the South, heard that Israel was coming on the road to Atharim, then he fought against Israel and took some of them prisoners. 2 So Israel made a vow to the LORD, and said, "If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities." 3 And the LORD listened to the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites, and they utterly destroyed them and their cities. So the name of that place was called Hormah.

  • Josh 8:1-2 1 Now the LORD said to Joshua: "Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed; take all the people of war with you, and arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land. 2 "And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king. Only its spoil and its cattle you shall take as booty for yourselves. Lay an ambush for the city behind it."

  • These are just a few verses, but if you read throughout the Old Testament, you will read of God telling the Children of Israel to destroy (go to war) the wicked nations.

So then what was God talking about when He said: Thou shalt not kill. Ex 20:13 (KJV)

I think a better understanding would be: You shall not murder. Ex 20:13 (NKJV)

When God said not to kill or murder, He was talking about a pre-meditated murder against someone else. Just as we hear of someone killing people for no good reason other then they are evil. They don't know these people are sometimes they do, but out of anger and hatred they kill someone close to them or others they don't even know.

War is something totally different. With war it is defending your country and the people. War is stopping evil that is attacking the country or has plans to attack it.
To put this on a very small scale would be; if someone was to come and try to kill my wife and/or child, I would protect them. I would nor sit back and say, "I'm sorry honey, but God said I can't kill therefore you will just have to die a horrible death." That would be crazy on my part and this would not be murder; it would be defending the people I love.

Now to put this on a large scale such as what is happening today in Iraq.
We know Iraq supports those who want to hurt and kill us here in the USA and those in other countries.
They do it all in the name of their religion. They believe if they kill someone who is not of their faith, that it will get them to a higher place, a sort of heaven if you will.

We know they have already attacked us (how soon we have forgotten September 11th); they also attacked our warship in its harbor, and have attacked other countries including Israel.

Should we just sit back and allow others to come and kill our families and loved ones?
Our president has tired to be patient and the USA has tried to be patient for over 12 years now. But how many will have to die before those who are protesting the war will realize why we are doing this.
Does someone in their family have to die before they will get off the streets and start support our young men and women who are there fighting for us and them? (I really am trying not to put my own feelings into this.)

"OK, what about turning the other cheek like Jesus said?"

  • Matt 5:39 "But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

  • Once again in the context of what Jesus is talking about, this is between you and another person.
If you want to say it could be between nations, we have turned our cheek and they hit the other side also, then they hit us in the belly, and in the heart. How long should we allow others to beat and kill us?

"OK, So we are going there to help those in Iraq to be liberated from the evil that is running the country. Why should we have to do this and is it really that bad?"

    Good question.
You see, what's happening there in Iraq is the women are being rapped, beaten and even murdered. If a woman is proposed to and refuses to marry the man she could be killed. If a woman exposes just part of her face, she can be stoned and killed right there in the streets and no one would dare help her. Women are treated as the lowest scum of the earth. Dogs are considered more valuable then women.
The men are also beaten, mutilated and murdered if they do not follow what the leadership says.
You have the extremely rich and the extremely poor. The rich refuse to help the poor even though this country is rich in oil; many starve and live in total poverty as the rich laugh and make fun of them.

I do understand why we are going there to help these people and it's something we should be doing.

  • 1 John 3:17-18 17 But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? 18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

  • Those opposing the war say they are doing it to help the innocent in Iraq. If there were not a war, how many of them would really go help those in need in Iraq?

But here is the problem I have with us trying to help rid the evil in Iraq.

  • Matt 7:3-5 3 "And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 "Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove the speck from your eye'; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5 "Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

  • As I mentioned the way the women are treated in Iraq, what about the way we treat our women here in the USA?
How many of them are exposed in the nude and used in perverted ways to feed the lust of men here.
Can you watch a TV show or even a commercial telling women if they don't have the right look or the right make-up or right body they are useless to anyone.
Do not the women here in the USA feel second rate if they do not fit up to the standards that man has lain upon them.
They are too fat, their breasts are too small; they don't show enough skin when they wear those clothes.

How many cities have at least one pornography store?
How many stores, just in your neighborhood, sell Playboy and/or Penthouse?

And how often is the Lord God's name used in vain as a joke or a curse word?
How many movies are there out there right now that haven't used the Lord's name as a curse word?
How many comedians can tell a joke without cursing or degrading a woman or using the Lord's name in vain? How many laugh at them and want more?

Sure Iraq serves a false god, but they would never use Allah's name in vain.
But we use the name of Jesus as a name of cursing and hatred towards others.
The USA constantly tells God to damn anything and everything. (I wonder what would happen if God started doing it every time someone said it?)

We have taken God out of our schools and some have even taken God out of the church.
We have taken the birth of Jesus Christ and turned it into a holiday instead of a celebration of what God has done for us by sending His only Son Jesus to die for us.

The celebration of the resurrection of Jesus we have turned over to a rabbit!

Do I have to go on?

Sure, we should help those in Iraq as well as other countries, by why don't we start cleaning up the USA (Removing the log from our own eye) before we start helping others (removing the speak from their eye).

"Wait, I thought this was about war" What is this other stuff you are talking about?"

We pray and ask the Lord to watch over and protect our men and women who are fighting for us, and for some reason we think God is on our side, like we are better then Iraq, therefore God will listen to us only.

  • Josh 5:13-14 13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, "Are You for us or for our adversaries?" 14 So He said, "No, but as Commander of the army of the LORD I have now come." And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, "What does my Lord say to His servant?"

  • I can't say whose side God is on, or if He is in any side, but if you read the Old Testament whenever the children of Israel was in sin by serving other gods, they would lose the battles they were fighting. Only when they cleaned up their act and got rid of these false idols did God protect them.

  • Josh 7:10-12 10 So the LORD said to Joshua: "Get up! Why do you lie thus on your face? 11 "Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff. 12 "Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you.

  • When and only when we turn to the Lord and repent as a nation will He bless us and protect our men and women.

  • Judges 10:13-16 13 "Yet you have forsaken Me and served other gods. Therefore I will deliver you no more. 14 "Go and cry out to the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in your time of distress."

15 And the children of Israel said to the LORD, "We have sinned! Do to us whatever seems best to You; only deliver us this day, we pray." 16 So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD. And His soul could no longer endure the misery of Israel.

  • I know this is hard to take and hard to swallow. I have a son in the Air Force who may be sent to Iraq any time now.
Please also understand that I love the USA and I think it is a great nation, but it could be better if it truly served the Lord God like it did when our founding fathers came here.
We need to see and understand the more we throw God out of our nation the more corrupt we become.
People laugh and say that's old fashion. I will take old fashion over sin and corruption any day.

So to sum up this study, God is not against war and has even told the children of Israel to go to war to rid their land of the evil that would pollute them if they allowed it to stay there.

The command of: Thou shalt not kill. Ex 20:13 (KJV) is not in reference to war, it's just a copout people use especially by those who never studied or know the bible.
It's interesting that they will quote this verse, but will reject Jesus who said: 16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. John 3:16-17

They wont believe in Jesus, but they will use God's word as an excuse not to protect their country?

We are right to go and help and protect those in Iraq and even in other countries that are being oppressed by evil, but we also should look at ourselves here in the USA and the evil we have allowed to take over us.

"OK, so what should we do? Should I sign up and go to war?"

I cannot answer that question for you, but if you are like me, and over 40 years old, I don't think our country is that desperate for soldiers.

But what we should do and always be doing, even if we are not at war, is pray for our president.
One thought is God may be using us to destroy a wicked nation like Iraq, and God wanted to wait (12 years) until a Godly man was president, because a man of God would listen to God. (Yes president Bush is a Christian and is not ashamed to admit it)
We should pray for wisdom and understanding for our president. Pray that he would seek the Lord continually and that the Lord would speak to him and he would be obedient to what the Lord tells him to do.

Pray for our other leaders, first pray for their salvation and that they also would seek the Lord. Pray for wisdom and understanding for them also.

Next pray for our men and women as well as other from other nations who are fighting for us in Iraq and other parts of the world. Remember they are doing it for you and your family.

Pray for the families of those who are fighting for us. Pray for peace that surpasses all understanding that only the Lord can give to them.

Pray for those who have been captured. Pray for their safety and safe return. Also pray for their families.

You may not realize this because secular news does not tell this, but there is a revival going on in the military, where hundreds of thousands of men and women are asking for bibles. I am trying to find the link to who is supporting this need, because I heard about it on a Christian radio station where this organization is distributing care packages that includes a New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs and a daily devotional or reading guide. Thousands of our troops are asking for this and this organization is overwhelmed with the requests.
I will put the link on the home page as soon as I find out where it is. If you know, then please e-mail me.

Pray for the innocent in Iraq.
Pray for the salvation of the Iraqi's.
Pray for the salvation of Saddam Hussein and his leaders. You never know, they thought Paul (Saul) would never be saved.

  • Acts 9:13-16 13 Then Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. 14 "And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name." 15 But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. 16 "For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name's sake."

  • Pray for the war protesters, that their eyes would be open to the lies that they believe and are proclaiming.

Finally pray that your heart would be right in all of this and that we as Christians would always pray the Lord's will and not mans.
Pray that we could be there for those who need comforting and encouragement.

Pray for the Lord's quick return, but also thank Him for His patience because: The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

Maybe you are the one the Lord is waiting for.
You may not understand all of this, but you see the Lord's hand in it.
Maybe you have realized that you are one of those who have served other gods and you realize how wrong you were and how right God is.

God is not angry with you, He just wants you to stop (repent) and believe in His Son Jesus who died for your sins. You can do this right now; just pray this prayer from your heart.

Jesus, I admit I am a sinner. I ask You to please forgive me for my sins. I believe You died for all my sins and rose from the dead on the third day. I believe that You are God who came in the flesh because You love me. I don't understand how You could love someone like me, but I thank You that You do. Please help me to turn from my sinful ways and follow You from this day forward. Please fill me with Your Holy Spirit and may I tell others about You and how You died for them too. Lead to those who need comfort and encouragement, and may I help them with a pure heart.
Thank You Jesus. I ask this in Your name Jesus. AMEN!

Is that too cool or what. If you just prayed that prayer from your heart, welcome to the family of God, you are now a Christian and your name is written in the Lambs book of life, meaning you have a reservation in heaven and Jesus is preparing a place for you there right now.

Maybe you didn't pray this prayer. Maybe you have more questions.
Please e-mail me, or go to your local church and talk to the pastor.
Also read your bible and ask the Lord to help you to understand His word. He will if you ask Him, but you got to ask.

You may think I am an idiot and will answer to God for posting this teaching.
Should I water down God's word to make you happy!
I would rather stand before God and say that I warned them about their sins, then to stand there and make excuses for not telling them.
As always I would encourage you to check out God's word and find the truth for yourself.

Well I think I did a pretty good job of holding back my own thoughts and I pray that God's word has helped you to understand war a little better and what we should be doing.

If you are still struggling with the whole war thing, send me an e-mail and I will try my best to answer your questions based upon the word of God.
Maybe you need comfort, once again e-mail me so I can pray for you.
Also don't hesitate to send e-mails to be posted on the prayer page for yourself or others so that others can pray for you and them too.

    One final note:
At the end of the book of Revelation, there is a final battle (war).
    God didn't start it,

  • Rev 20:7-10 7 Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. 9 They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. 10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

  • But He WILL finish it!
May the God of all comfort, give us all a peace that surpasses all understanding in these times of war and even in time of peace! AMEN!!!
