John 2:15-16
15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers' money and overturned the tables. 16 And He said to those who sold doves, "Take these things away! Do not make My Father's house a house of merchandise!"
Remember the old days when cars had carburetors?
When your car started to run sluggish, sometimes it meant that the carburetor was dirty and you had to clean it out. Sometimes this would involve removing the whole carburetor and rebuilding so that you could get all that junk out of it.
That was sort of what Jesus was doing here. The Jewish leaders were taking advantage of the people and things were not running smoothly like God intended it to be.
The problem was all the junk that the leaders made the people go through, but as soon as Jesus cleaned things up, things started to run smoothly once again.
We never seem to think about the fact that even though Jesus cleaned the temple that it did not stop from functioning as it was intended, it just started to run better or as it was intended to without all that junk blocking those who wanted to worship the Lord.
The Lord does the same thing in our lives.
We are full of sin (junk) and the Lord has to clean house.
1 Cor 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?
It sometimes may not seem like much fun when the Lord does clean house, but rest assured that after He does, things will start running better.
1 Cor 6:20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.
It's easier to do this when your temple (body) is clean of all the junk (sin).
